Of Dangerous Han

Kai knew that he was dreaming. That wasn’t an issue. The issue was the dream itself. He remembered that day all too well. And he couldn’t forget. He would never forget. That day may have been one of the best days of his life, but it was dreadful for the same reasons that it was good and even worse for others.

He locked the bathroom door behind him, stumbled across the room and slid down against the wall. He sobbed, fought for breath, tugged at his hair, and scratched at his hands.

Downstairs, his father lay unconscious on the sofa.

Blood stained his new, bright, torn white shirt. Soreness wound around his arms, across his stomach, reddened skin that soon would be purple. Then he dragged himself up by the sink. He tried to tear his eyes from his reflection. Paled face, reddened eyes. Black makeup left smudged from the day before. Crusted blood sat at the base of his nose, and he drank in the coppery ruby from his split lip.

It dripped into the porcelain sink.

He wanted nothing more than to leave that house. He wanted to call Jay, take Karebu and just run and run and run. It was too much for him that day, too loud, too harsh. His father’s eyes were too red, too fiery. His words were cruel, and his fist unforgiving.

He never understood what set it off. He didn’t understand why it happened. His father was so sweet, so kind, so fun. He always was around his mum. Like whatever demon took over and waged war understood that she wouldn’t allow it for a second. He knew that that man was not his father, not when his charmed eyes turned that torturous red.

Perhaps, Kai thought, he’d inherited a worse version of the Han’s eye power, a curse. A version that made him forget who he really was. He became an entirely different person. And he could only hope that he, or Karebu, would never, ever be forced to unlock their Han eyes, lest whatever happened to their father happen to them too.

He looked away from the mirror and into the sink. He rinsed the blood staining the porcelain, then cupped water and washed his face. Red swirled away into the drain. He applied a healing balm to his lips. The small cut vanished, leaving only a swollen lip.

He forewent his morning skincare routine and changed. He threw his shirt in the bin and snuck downstairs. His father lay still. A slight snore all to be heard. He covered him with blankets. When he woke, he’d merely think he’d passed out again and make plans to make a doctor’s appointment once more.

He had no idea that as Kai went for an early breakfast, he’d grabbed his son and flung him down to the floor. Without looking back, he slipped out through the door and began wandering the streets in the early hours of the morning.

His feet took him straight through the deserted streets and to the cliffs.
